NYT Two Sides of Palestine Part A
NYT Two Sides of Palestine Part B
NYT Two Sides of Palestine Part C
This article was published in the NYT Sunday Magazine on May 16th, 1948 (You can see the date clearly on Part C) This was published two days after independence was declared and war had erupted a day earlier. The UN had proposed a partition in November of 1947. The new state of Israel was singlehandedly endorsed against the world communities wishes by Harry Truman - throwing the weight of the US behind it and damning the US to Anti-US sentiment ever since.
This is the very first major US media news article on the conflict wired in. (rare stuff ;-)
There was no Israel - there was only Palestine. And despite this being the NYT, you can see that they clearly believe the Zionists are deluding themselves about who opposes their presence in the region and that one side will be destroyed.
First hand, timely sources of information are always the best. History gets rewritten by folks with an agenda. In the Wikipedia era almost no one consults accurate information anymore.
