Jerusalem has little religious significance to Muslims compared to Jews and Christians. It has significance to muslims in that the crusades were a battle over this city.

I think it needs to be pointed out that in 2000 Israel offered East Jerusalem to Arafat as the capital of a palestinian state. In an act of utter idiocy and short-sightedness he turned down the offer without making any counter-offers.
