I don't see much of a "battle" here. Jefferson said it, and if you look at world history, you can probably count on one hand the times a tyranny has fallen peacefully and become a free nation. The jury is still out on Russia, which frankly, hasn't changed all that much in how it does things.
I also wouldn't mind seeing quotes backing the professor's idea that Jefferson changed his views on this. If Jefferson didn't think it applied to him after the Revolution and the founding of a new Constitutional government, maybe it was because he wasn't the leader of a tyranny.
For the record, neither is Obama, and neither was Bush, who got a thousand times the crap we're now seeing at anti-Obama demonstrations, and nobody was getting the vapors about it. I used to post pictures from demonstrations back then with horrific stuff in them, and the response was either a yawn or "why are you painting everyone there with that brush?"
