We are working on tools that will give us essentially the ability to turn a ground based telescope like the Keck 10meter telescopes, or the 30meter (and larger) telescopes under construction into - essentially- space telescopes with the same diameters...
We will be able to do spectroscopy on the atmospheres of Earth-like planets around Sun-like stars- allowing us to look for the atmospheric markers of life - and perhaps even technologically advanced life...
These tools will lead to a revolution in astronomy, and looking at extra-solar planets will only be a small part of what will be made possible.
The universe- as we know it- will change dramatically in the coming decade.
