Hoaxes, I agree fully with RL. It is unlikely a hoax like this could be kept under wrap. The utility of such a hoax is not clear. Perhaps disinformation as ER suggests, but such a campaign would seem to lack seriousness.
Governments, still my first choice. Perhaps a breakthrough in quantum mechanics so big and with potentially huge military applications, that it is being kept completely classified as it is developed? Something along those lines are most likely imo. Just because the technological leap is massive doesn't necessarily mean humans couldn't have figured it out.
Corporations, Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos? lol. There is massive technological research going on at corporations all around the world all the time. Did some mad scientist make a breakthrough?
Aliens, well let's get real. There ARE technologically advanced aliens out there in the universe. No question. If their civilization existed at the same time as ours and they were anywhere near us (long long odds on both of those things), you can bet they'd be fascinated by us. They'd be glued to their viewing screens watching the shit show on this planet. They'd send Oumuamua probes to check us out up close. A possibility but still my last choice.
