The "Genuine TB Inside" post was superficially entirely about Tom, but on another level, it was about "you thought there could ever be a truce????". I could've riffed on a scorpion and a frog, but that's been done to death. A draft image I erased was about how Tom uses putdowns like that almost the way other people use punctuation; or that it was his "signature block". To a large degree it's a matter of style: That's simply how Tom seems compelled to write.
The Mallard Fillmore strip does have an invariant format that's as predictable as kabuki, and it does parallel the style in the post you were responding to. Left panel identifies the target; the right panel slips in the knife. Tom dances that two-step a lot, a link or a quote, followed by an attack on the left.
Think of it as Tourette's Syndrome. I try to filter out the compulsive insults, and if there's anything left, then I might respond.
