You can't pick and choose the passages you want from a a two hundred year old political debate to prove anything. The fact that there was a debate and the US soon had a standing army (and a pretty damned good professional Navy, too) should tell you something. Besides, I have never been opposed to private gun ownership, I own several of my own, remember?
Neither am I opposed to uniformed, disciplined, trained forces, under the command of elected civilian authority. Neither am I opposed to part-time citizen soldiers and auxiliaries, reservists, or other irregulars, but also under constitutional, representative civil command.
In fact, that's probably what the founders actually had in mind during those debates. Not that what they were debating mattered. What matters is what they finally voted in as law. The founders' every word and utterance cannot be used as a precedent for law, for one thing, they disagreed violently on just about everything. It's the compromises they hammered out that are what guides us, as amended by later generations.
What I am vigorously opposed to is private goon squads with their own agendas roaming around deciding which of my rights need to be protected. Hitler and the Nazis used private militias like that, the SA, street punks in snappy brown uniforms with lots of leather and brass, hobnail boots and really keen arm bands. After a while they'll start extorting money from us for their own upkeep, drafting our children, and deciding which laws need to be created and enforced. And who will dare stop them? As far as I'm concerned, those are just criminal gangs, we already have those, and they aren't working out very well as citizen militias. Do you really think just because they have crewcuts, recite the Pledge of Allegiance during morning muster and wear "Don't Tread on Me" badges on their shoulders will guarantee they won't turn out to be just thugs with guns?
Besides, we had an outfit like that in the 60s, the Black Panthers, and I don't recall conservatives being too keen on them at the time.

I really don't like the idea of private citizen battalions.
