We all do it

Remember that I did call leading with the H-bomb argument "trotting out the horribles". But as for the rest of it, I was responding to what Coxe is quoted as saying, not your interpretation of it. He celebrates weaponry, on the one hand, but does seem to admit to some misgivings that we might blow each others' bosoms away.

Off on a not-so-unrelated tangent, in the course of work with a university that trains psychologists, I've come across a new school of thought called "narrative psychology". One of its interesting premises is that our internal representations of other people, formed by our primate "theory of mind", act as sounding boards, portable advisors and mentors we can carry around with us to help as we think through difficult issues. Having a conversation with a Founder is one vivid example of that, as is talking to a parent or other respected elder. We're not just having hallucinations or daydreaming, asking "What Would the Founders Do?" and talking things over with them is a very useful mental tool.

This is what it means to gain immortality through history. The original Thomas Jefferson is long dead and buried, but he lives on as an avatar in millions of minds.
