I've never seen a tyranny yet, regardless of core ideology, that didn't claim it wasn't for liberty and freedom. And I've never heard of a tyrant yet that didn't sincerely believe he was doing the right thing by his country. And when a tyranny is finally overthrown, there are always those who are nostalgic for the "good old days", and they aren't necessarily from the former ruling class, either.
Hitler and Stalin both had their apologists, as did Mao, and I bet Pol Pot does too. There are still Cubans who will swear how wonderful Batista was, and there will be those who will miss Fidel when he's gone. Mussolini, Franco, Peron, Pinochet, they all had their fans as well, and some remain to this day, even among those who weren't even alive during their time. And they are always nationalists and very, very patriotic.
I tend to get very suspicious of people who are always dreamy and misty-eyed about freedom, liberty, and the flag.
