But how else would you describe a paramilitary organization that is heavily armed, uniformed and disciplined, drills with live ammunition, and has a specific right-wing political agenda, even if it is not government sanctioned? I do know there are many other variations on this theme, even Communist countries have "militias" which act as auxiliaries to their regular forces, and in some of our states the National Guard is called "the militia". But aren't we just splitting hairs?
But I do think I see what you're getting at. If there was a left wing paramilitary organization that was heavily armed, uniformed and disciplined, drilled with live ammunition, and had a specific socialist political agenda, it probably wouldn't be called a "militia". They would just be domestic terrorists.
(Parenthetical note: Wiki seems to be having a terrible time putting responses in the right place.)
