I did not "conveniently overlook" the population numbers. The first thing I did a long time ago when I found those constant dollar budget charts was look up the population growth in that time to see if it was a major factor. It wasn't.
Population growth was the first thing I mentioned in my first response on Federal numbers here. If Federal budget growth had only been proportional to population the current budget, in current dollars, would be about $1.81 trillion, and 2010 would have a surplus right now, in this economy, of about 355 billion dollars. Instead we are $1.5 trillion in the hole.
