Yeah, that's the old "Marxism Lite" argument that I've heard a number of times: that if we allow socialism to a certain extent, it will inoculate us against...more socialism. Unfortunately, it usually ends up being the camel's nose in the tent.
Look at a list of the goals in the Communist Manifesto, and grab a highlighter to see how many leftists have enacted in our country, and how many others they're still pushing for in one form or another.
Not to belabor the point (no pun intended) but the leaderships of a lot unions are, in fact, basically Marxist in their beliefs, and their highest priority is not serving the "middle class," but creating a power structure where they run things. I wish someone had collected screen caps of some of their websites before they realized everyone was looking at them.
Please don't try to teach me history. I know, for example, what governmental philosophy lies behind Mexico and almost every other nation with a powerful elite and a miserable underclass.
Hint: It ain't 19th century capitalism. Look at Libya, for example. Or as they call themselves, the "Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya."
