I'm looking at the nation right now, Buck. And most unions have the primary function today of servicing a single political party with power and loot. Not to mention themselves.
As far as the 19th century is concerned, like Eri, you're wrapped around a mythology that doesn't stand up to analysis, and I can't pump twenty years of study in this area in one post.
I remember documenting what actually happened with FDR, the Depression, and the economy back then, and it didn't get me a lot of fans here.
