A big mistake is talking about the environmental movement as though it were rational, and not an anti-industrial religion. I'm beginning, after a number of years, to focus in on the psychology of the formal Leftist movement.
What follows are just some thoughts along these lines:
Remember the old days, when the communists touted how their system was going to build more factories, more industry, and create material well-being? Remember the propaganda posters that were almost never seen without smokestacks or power lines? Remember how they were going to "bury" us? Or "leave us in the dust" depending on the translation?
The actual results over the following decades were not prosperity, but a kind of living death for every society that went that route. Across many cultures, races, and geographies, collectivist ideas destroyed every single nation that consistently applied them. Meanwhile, free market ideas resulted - across many cultures, races, and geographies - in liberty, prosperity, and increasing standards of living across the income spectrum.
Many American leftists over those years faced the facts and stopped believing. I know a few. Some just went quietly nuts. I know a few of those, too. As time went by, this evolution tended to weed out the rationality from the movement. As an example, despite the glaring evidence of half a century, even as recently as the last few years of the Cold War the Left consistently sided against the U.S. and in favor of every last communist thug who raised his head anywhere in the world. Try to find an exception.
So now, apparently for the crime of defeating their beloved communism, the West has to die. The environmental movement slowly lost all those people who just wanted to clean up dirty rivers and air, and what was left was a small, radical core. There's a reason almost every solution provided by the environmentalists for issues (real and imagined) involve the demolition of the Western lifestyle. We must reduce, ration, crawl back into earlier times.
Energy "too cheap to meter" from any source, clean or not, would be a nightmare for such ambitions. I still remember this.
