I like that "classroom experiment" quote. Reminds me of my college days when the leftists would use the Israeli kibbutz as an example of how well collectivism works. Meanwhile, East and West Germany and North and South Korea were making their own points.

Your other points are good ones. The math exercise I was doing was oversimplified, to be sure, but the cold fact remains at the end that if we are going to bring the planet as a whole up to Western standards, we are going to need a lot of energy, and cheap energy at that. That power also gives you the option of doing many other things you need to do, like desalinating water for example.

I don't know what's going on in Iceland. Last time I studied them it was in relation to an aluminum plant they were talking about building to use some of the excess electricity they have. There's an interesting tool here that people can play with. The unit seems to be a broader reflection of overall energy use. Look at Iceland spike after 2005.

P.S. I've been playing with the graphing widget and what's interesting is how flat the curves are for most western nations. Individually, most of us aren't using that much more energy than in the 1960s, and even less than the 70s. I think this says a lot for what technology and efficiency have already accomplished. Either that, or I'm totally misreading the units.
