Publius,
Your supposedly clear distinction between liberals and conservatives is anything but. I have observed many so-called liberals that feel just as strongly that they have the only right answer ( the "revealed word", however the revalation occurred) and therefore accuse dissenters to their viewpoint of starving babies etc.
A true conservative believes in limited government with many checks and balances. So they tend to seem slow to redress social injustice, fearing that the alternative to an imperfect system would be something even worse (anarchy). They tend to believe in more social control and less economic, while a liberals would favor less social control and more economic.
But there are Statists - communists on the left and fascists on the right that think they need to control everything because human nature is so bad/weak that only total control can alter human nature for the better. Then there are libertarians who feel most social interaction can be resolved without recourse to coersion by the government. That is where I lean - Situations like Enron get resolved in court under contract law and fraud and larceny prosecutions. Connecticut is moving to revoke Anderson's licence to practice for instance.
Although clear cut distinctions would make life simple, please don't fall into the trap of oversimplifiying to the point where dialogue ceases.
