And another thing

<Another way of putting it is that a conservative believes that there are objective moral standards, and a liberal decides for himself what is right and wrong depending on....depending on what?

Gee, Tom, maybe I could tell you, "if", as the strawman said, "I only had a brain."

You have confused "liberal" with "moral relativist", a mistake one makes from having heard the error repeated over and over and over and over and over on talk radio.

It may surprise you to learn that many liberals, even the atheist and agnostic variety, long ago recognized the efficacy of a precept known as the Golden Rule, which knows no boundaries of religion. Of course, it requires generosity of spirit and a certain sympathy with the other guy, since one must actually try to put one's self in his shoes. It's hard, too, because one must use judgment, and sometimes one fails.

I'm sure there are conservatives who adhere to the Golden Rule too. I know about two dozen myself. The rest are so busy trying to codify and enforce "objective moral standards" that they've lost track of this least adorned and most difficult of paths. But then, if you're following 1,516 little rules, you don't have to think too hard about what the rules mean. It's enough to follow them. Baaaa.
