Morals are always good for fencing. I get an image of you as Maureen O'Hara (Claire, daughter of Athos in “At Sword's Point”).

"If it feels good, do it."
The Golden Rule fits this very well.
The feel good/do it simplex, though, needs to become a complex, with an added qualifier that takes the mental health of the doer into account:
"If it feels good, in a sane way, do it."
Of course this would require some form of mental evaluation, self or otherwise.
A self analysis:
* If your car stalls in the intersection, would you like someone to stop and help you move it out of the line of traffic?
It doesn't matter that you know without question your car could never do anything like that to you. The question remains valid.
* If you happen to be standing on a bus and it lurches forward from the bus stop, thereby causing you to lose your grip and to stumble backward, would you want someone to at least try to catch you?
It doesn't matter that you've never ridden the bus, or that you likely never will. The question remains valid.
* If you’re out on the lake on a blustery day and your small sailboat happens to tip over, would you want someone to come out and see if you're alright?
It doesn't matter that you would never be caught in such a flimsy vehicle. The question remains valid.
Religion has nothing to do with the above, yet I have dutifully responded to each, and have received the same in return -- though, as would be expected, not as often as I would like. Far too many religious people insist "there's no such thing as a free meal", which is how they tend to look at any hand out -- even if it's an empty hand to pull you back up onto the sidewalk of life.
It costs so much to:
* drive across the intersection to the gas station, get out of the car, and help push a vehicle up into a lot
* put out a hand to catch a person falling on the bus
* turn the wheel of your boat and come up alongside the capsized craft, offering your assistance in righting it
But when you do it, it feels good -- because it's just plain nice to do, and nice feels good.
It’s really not all that hard,
Dan

As a matter of humanity, you don’t have to do the right thing, but you do have to try.
