That piece of The Ascent of Man is the most important lesson in the entire work. To know that you've learned it - well, let's just say it confirms my suspicion that you're not such a bad guy after all.

Now if we could just figure out why, with all of the proper moral grounding, you continue to use far too wide a tar brush when painting those with whom you disagree...

As Mary Anne has said above (invoking the 'Golden Rule' to do so), it is possible to live a moral life and teach it to one's children without recourse to the supernatural or to traditional mythology (regardless of the tradition or mythology). Thousands of people in this country, at least, without formal religious affiliation or any at all, do so successfully - my parents among them.
