Re: money into a sink hole

The problem is not so much that they are getting outside assistance than it is the corrupt collectivist governments that are typically in charge in Third World nations. I will grant that most formal assistance money probably ends up in Swiss bank accounts, but that doesn't mean that these nations should be walled off and abandoned. From what I have seen, "willing to work" is what most of these people certainly are, so that can't be the main issue.

Mary Anne had the right idea when she referred to "specific projects" on a small scale, which is handled nicely in many cases from private volunteers and donations. I have a very dim view of government-to-government financial aid, which is ripe for corruption (ref. Swiss bank accounts).

Some method of introducing capitalism to such nations without all the private property winding up in the hands of Fearless Leader and his relatives would also be a good idea, but this is no piece of cake, and may not even be possible in many situations. It has to be handled on a case-by-case basis.
