Please rethink your statement about absorpton. We do see uniform absorbtion all the way around the comet, The only difference is that we must wait for a complete cycle around the sun to see the entire thing. We are talking about a phenomenon dealing with crystals, multiple gogoggle of very tiny prisims. Perhaps as few as one crystal in a thousand cubic meters of otherwise empty space. Practically invisible to light, until just the correct angle of light strikes the crystal. Then suddenly like a fresnel lens, a high proportion of these crystals refract the light of the coma, Not direct sunlight back towards the viewer. Spectrographic analysis will make it appear as if this is where the matter exists because this is the only place where any light is able to be seen. No reflection of sunlight is to be seen, mearly refraction of coma light.
The tail on the comet will appear to grow longer as the luminoscity of the coma increases.
