What Mars enthusiasts see that you don't is that there are many hazards to our survival besides impacts. A second branch of humanity either mitigates these or is the first step on a path towards mitigating them. Your views are based on an entirely too lmited view of potential danger not to mention some highly inflated impact risk numbers.
We can easily afford a search for civilization threatening impactors. It is a shame we have not fully funded the spacegaurd proposals. We can even easily afford a satellite to detect small impactors. It is not funding for Mars that stands in the way, it is the low priority politicians place on problems unlikely to effect their re-election campaigns. It is also possible that vocal nut jobs spouting easily refutable statistics have reduced the credibility of serious impact researchers.

Mark
