You're basing your opinion about what is "obvious to most people" on your perception of "most people" who participate in this bbs - you have to remember that 60% and RISING of the US population think sending men to Mars would be a waste of money.
While popular manned Mars is limited abroad, fixation on it here in the US is distracting from dealing with a very real hazard.
Further, most people in the US also mistakenly believe that NASA already has the problem in hand, when in fact exactly the opposite is true.
