While "Mars enthusiasts" may be dense to this hazard, that's not true for the population as a whole.
The problem is that most of them have been led to believe by those responsible that they are doing something adequate. This illusion is fostered by those responsible in vain attempts to save their butts in their jobs.
As for a manned Mars lab, it is a mistake to give a "lifeboat" higher priority thatn the safety of the "ship" itself - particualarly when there will not be enough "lifeboats" to go around.
