Let's see, Mark, what has it been, something like 3 years to get you to come around part way?
phil's post above got me to thinking -
Because of NASA's failure to develop artificially intelligent robotic vision systems and autonomous control programs, the first rover capable of satisfying the NRC's back contamination concerns will not be launched until 2009 or 2010. Then NASA will have to launch at least 2 more of them after that before it will be able to satisfy the NRC, NIH, and CDC's concerns.
That means that a hole has opened for a private Mars rover in the 2005 - 2007 time frame - if the demographics are good for the 2003 shots.
Whenever NASA applies minimally adequate resources to dealing with the NEO hazard, it will be good news, as then I will be able to walk away from this with a clear concious.
I like Langely's idea of a man tended Moon based observatory, and know that it can be done with current technologies, and at a reasonable price - but I'll settle for at least one, preferably a couple, of space based telescopes.
