Osama Bin Laden was a NOBODY back in the 1980's, and American CIA operatives who were there at the time stated that they don't even remember him from among the many rebels who were receiving aid and arms.
The US did not put out a call for Islamic fundamentalists; they put out a call for Afghans. And at the time, it was the correct thing to do.
And by the way, the Taliban didin't even exist as an organization until several years after the Soviet Union had left Afghanistan, and the US CIA as well.
