My doubts about Bush's approach with the U.N. do not mean that I don't agree that at some point Saddam needs to be taken out.
Maybe those who are creeped out about preemptive attacks would prefer that he nuke some city first, or get enough weapons so that when the shit inevitably hits the fan, he can give us a really good fight and kill tens of thousands of American soldiers.
Or maybe we do need to change our policies, and cut out the cancer while it's still small. Maybe it's past time that murderous goons are allowed to run their little kingdoms unopposed. By the "let it be" political theory, maybe we should just have left the Southern states to secede, and keep their slaves.
Unknown territory? Agreed. And maybe we move towards an Empire instead of a Republic. As a libertarian, I'm certainly not going to say that I like it. But we developed our isolationist political philosophies 200 years ago, when the Atlantic and the Pacific made a real difference in who could get at us. And anyone who thinks that no one would hate us if we hunkered down inside our own borders is naive at best.
I don't have all the answers, but I haven't heard any better ideas from those against military action.
