Hunkering down inside our borders is one extreme, waging war on Iraq to effect regime change is another. Between these two widely separated extremes lie a wide range of options surely within the imaginative grasp of most reasonable persons.
But reasonable options seem to be outside the cognitive range of those who argue for extreme solutions, while offering another extreme as the only remaining possibility.
Or, as Aesop might put it (on a very bad day)...
"Oh my god!" said the monkey to the bull,
"If we don't go kill the bear, the bear will eat us all. So either we huddle here in fear, or we go out and kill the bear."
"Hmmmm," mused the mule in the corner, "I thought that bear liked honey."
