Sorry, Robert.
The dating post was pretty lame. I usually avoid the mad magazine style humor, but sometimes I just churn out a response without any finesse.
;-)
As for 2002, when one knows the hurdles placed before republican victories, the outcome - regardless of voter turn out - is still very encouraging for Bush and his agenda.
Even if 40% of the US is fine with Saddam and believes Bush is an idiot-savant who is preparing a global coup, and 10% are undecided, there are 50% who are all too happy to take out Saddam.
One of the great joys of being a collector of historical periodicals is being able to tap forgotten statistics and information. Prior to US entry into WWII fortune magazine had issued a survey among its readers as to the US involvement in the war in Europe.
I put hthis image up as an example of the old Fortunes - but also so it would widen the post window. So hopefully, this next portion will work properly! (Fingers crossed)
The July 1940 issue has a supplement: The FORTUNE Survey: XXXII - The War
I shall show a few interesting statistics.
Which of these comes closest to expressing what you thin the US should do now?
Enter the war at once on the side of the Allies.........................7.7%
Help the Allies and go to war only if the Allies seem sure to lose..19.2
Help the Allies but never enter the war...................................40.6
Take no sides.....................................................................26.0
Help Germany......................................................................0.2
Don't know..........................................................................6.3
Nations had fallen, the Third Reich was steamrolling Europe and yet only 26% wanted to send anyone to fight! Was this a sound judgement? Were the dictator-appeasers and anti-war folks right? Was Roosevelt playing loose with the truth to rally folks against Hitler?
And these folks were not optimistic about the Allies abilities either - which makes their non-commital stance all the more strange.
Regardless of what you hope, which side do you think will win the war in Europe, as it looks now?
Germany..........40.1%
The Allies.........30.3
Neither..............1.7
Don't know.......27.9
This one shows how times have changed:
Which one of these comes closest to what you think the government should do about communist sympathizers? Nazi sympathizers?
.........................................................Communist......Nazi
Nothing, or no more than it is now doing.......3.4%.........2.7%
Keep track of them so they could be
rounded up, if necessary............................16.6%......13.1%
Keep track of them and also prevent
them from agitating and organizing...............32.9%......28.2%
Deport them or put them in jail....................37.8%......46.1%
Don't know................................................9.3%.......9.9%
Wow! the majority are ready to throw commies in the slammer or deport them! Combined, 70% want them to be unable to organize, protest or assemble! I wonder what today's survey would look like? Heck, the universities would quickly be void of their faculties if this policy were enacted! And for Nazi sympathizers, 74% would like to see them deported, jailed or controlled!
What about Iraq/Saddam sympathizers? I wonder how this question would play out today?
If England and France run out of cash and want to buy more supplies here, should we provide them with cash by buying some of their territory on this side of the ocean?
Yes..............61.4%
No...............22.0
Don't know....16.6
No that's the ticket - over 60% feel taking land for our expenditures was just!
Yet now, this common sense attitude would be considered imperialistic.
So what was the point of this exercise? Simply to illustrate that even when the people don't want war - sometimes it's in the best interests of the world. It also shows that as a nation, many generations of Americans here have already been indoctrinated by the communist inspired, PC movement through our tainted halls of learning. Yes, the classroom flag burners are fired - but there are literally hundreds of thousands of others who are content to simply, subtly for a child - not so for a thinking adult, inflict the self-flagellation mindset upon our youth.
We are told we must not pursue dictators because in the past we have consorted with them.
We are told we must not pursue dictators because Bush is himself far worse than a dictator.
We are told we must not pursue dictators because all wars are evil.
We are told that we are the reason the Iraqis are suffering - because we imposed sanctions on a regime that invaded another country.
Yes, regime change we are told should start at home.
Yes, if it were not so scary that so many in the US have not the intellectual capacity to reason beyond the false arguments and moral equivalence ploys used by these self-flagellating sympathizers...it would be utterly hysterical.
Fortunately, their is a definite resurgence in intelligent thought, and it is appearing in opinion columns and on the radio - and the Saddam sympathisers and Osama onanists find themselves in diminishing numbers, desperately attempting to organize against this new outspoken folks who like their great-grandfathers are learning to tell right from wrong again.
It's that NoCal environmental influence that's causing the inner conflict and consternation for you Robert. A cultural prison made up of anti-conformists and schizophrenic capitalist exploiters who unknowingly are far more oppressive to the region than Alcatraz! The news, the mindset, the populace - all issued marching orders from the self-appointed cultural elite.
