Re: A profound truth

<All nations have an inherent right to self-determination, even Saddam's Iraq. He's not the first brutal tyrant the world has seen, nor will he be the last.

But the United States does not have the right, either legal or moral, to dictate to another country who will rule there and who will not.

I would be most interested in knowing if this "self-determination" rule was your exact position on South Africa before apartheid fell. Did you march in parades demanding that South Africa be left to rule itself as they saw fit?

And before you snap back that it was "different," since the population of South Africa was being cruelly oppressed, I would really count to ten first.

"Profound truths" on the Left tend to be flexible.

In the meanwhile, we need the oil, so why not make a deal? It might be somewhat hypocritical, but at least a lot of innocent people will not die, and Americans will be free to cruise in their SUV's, chat on their cel phones, and munch on their Big Macs in peace.

You make the point we've been trying to make all along...if it was really all about the oil, this would have been the easy way to go.
