Mark,
I do hope you don't base your opinion of Mr. Cronkite upon one individual's erroneous recantations of history from over thrity years ago. Fact is, Vietnam was this nation's first television war. The harsh realities of armed conflict found their way into America's living rooms via BAC, NBC and CBS. And Life magazine memorialized these images on their weekly front covers.
Walter Cronkite is still widely regarded as "the most trusted man in America." That's what makes his editorial so devastating to the Bush administration. Cronkite is about as mainstream America as it gets.
And please note he is not criticizing our brave soldiers in Iraq. He's criticizing the failed policies of the Bush administration which have placed these heroes directly in harm's way for no good reason. Here's his best quote from his commentary:
"No matter how gloriously the President paints our Iraq invasion as a mission to save the world from terrorism, there is no disguising the fact that in our desperate bid for help, we are dining on a massive helping of crow."
Mr. Cronkite's views not only reflect my own, but that of millions of other Americans who grow weary of having an incompetent serving as the leader of the free world.
