Mark,
I don't agree with Helen Thomas that we can "declare victory and leave." I think we are stuck and have no choice to see this through to the bitter end. But Ms. Thomas' commentary helps to illustrate that there are many across America who are no longer willing to accept whatever Mr. Bush happens to dish up...and that Mr. Bush may be in bigger political trouble than he imagines.
It was incredibly bad judgement for us to have engaged in a completely unnecessary pre-emptive war in Iraq. The basic premises for going to war - that Iraq possessed weapons of mas destruction and had direct relationships with Al Qaeda were exaggerated at best, or deliberate lies at worse.
Just so you know. I actually supported overturning Saddam, provided we had U.N. support for doing so. The Bush administration has made a terrific mistake by not demonstrating any semblance of diplomatic skill and wroking patiently and diligently to bring the U.N. along. By devolving into falacious claims we have ruined our internation prestige and credibility at the same time we have stretch this nation's critical resources to their limits.
Regards,
Donald
