The comparison is made relentlessly and at a high level by many who claim to speak for large segments of the population.
Calling a lawfully elected President 'the new Hitler' or any iteration oistoryf r hthis leaves no room for quiet discussion. It leaves no room for moderation. It would be as if I was talking with someone in the 60's and found them calling MLK 'ni**er'. There would be nothing left to say to that person because whatever else they might think they are contributing to the conversation at hand, they have made it clear they are jsut bigoted chuckleheads.
You post some quotes about people having a tough time while in detention as enemy combatants or as terrorists. There may or may not be civil liberty issues to be explored here, but the USSC (who has proven to be less than perfect) seems OK so far with what is going on.
I would point out that while it is worrying that potentially innocent (and I bet that there are some who will be found innocent) are being held during this war, this is not something new in our history, and in fact has occurred to at least some extent in most wars we have had.
Lincoln suspended habeus corpus, ahd people arrested in secret on unannounced charges and did other dirty things.
The fear of a bolshevik revolt in the US was great and there were tough tactics used against them after WWI. FDR imprisoned whole communities of people in WWII.
We came out OK. Everytime.
The steps Bush is taking in this war are tiny baby steps.
The refusal of so many of his opponents to see this or to put it in any kind of historical context is more troubling to me, frankly, than the actions he is taking.
