Yes, the majority of Germans are intelligent and highly cultured. That doesn't mean all of them are. In every country, there are the dregs, criminals, and cretins who won't ever amount to much except when someone ruthless uses them to gain power. We saw the same thing in Iraq with some of Saddam's goons. Even most of Germany's intelligent population has a tendency to prefer order over chaos like was the norm during the post WWI period. Hitler promised them order, and to an extent, he delivered. Of course, his version of order involved imprisoning or murdering those who disobeyed his rules.

Hitler rose to power using deliberate lies and assassination by goons like the SA, whom he then slaughtered when they were seen as a threat (The Night of the Long Knives). Read the history. It doesn't take brains to bash someone else's brains in. He pandered to the worst aspects of the lower class of Germans and managed over a period of years to gain political power. Pandering doesn't take brains, either.

I've studied this stuff for over 30 years, Mary Anne. You're simply wrong on this one. I respect you but, in this case, you're wrong. I studied it both as a military professional and as someone with a deep passion for history. Go ahead and read Meine Kampf. You won't be impressed with it, but it will help you understand how he thought. That understanding is crucial if we hope to prevent his kind from gaining that kind of power again.
