He may well have been a political genius, but politics is at the root of most human suffering. As a military leader, he made some incredibly stupid decisions, including:
Starting the war at least a year before the German Navy was ready (their U-boat strength was way below what was needed)
Failure to follow through when the British were backed up at Dunkirk (he listened to Goring, which was almost always a mistake).
A needless delay between Dunkirk and the start of the Battle of Britain that gave the British some time to regroup.
Lifting the bombing campaign from the RAF bases to bomb population centers
Invading the Soviet Union, especially being unprepared for the harsh winter
Declaring war on the US after Pearl Harbor (an especially stupid move)
Sacrifacing one top unit after another by refusing to let them withdraw from a hopeless situation.
Demanding that the Me-262 jet fighter be used as a bomber
This is by no means an exhaustive list. Militarily speaking, the man was better than Saddam (a cabbage could be a better military leader than Saddam) but otherwise thankfully inept.
As for Max Cleland, he served with distinction in Vietnam and sacrifaced a tremendous amount. I would never question his patriotism. There are times when his judgment was suspect, but never his patriotism.
