Do you mean to tell me that you seriously hold the position that, because a leader did something that was wrong on its face at the time (I'm thinking of FDR and the concentration camps), or seriously crippled Consitutional protections (Lincoln and habeas corpus), and we suffered no injury as a nation -- leaving aside the injuries done to the particular citizens -- it means we can continue to do such things in the future with no harm and no danger?
Please. People drive drunk and make it home without an accident all the time. Does that mean that there is no danger? No.
If we walk the path of ignoring our principles for the sake of political advantage, we run the risk of losing both our principles and our political system.
Of course you don't want to set aside the comparison. To do so would be to lay down one of the chief sources of outrage and distraction on the right.
