Flame » in reply to Tom, do you have children?

Two.

Katie's at Cambridge this week. Supposed to be visiting Stonehenge and Bath today. My son is at home, enjoying the summer. They'll be my kids until I die, and maybe then some.

But when they become adults, they will decide for themselves what they want to do about military service. Just like they will decide their careers, their families, and many other things. I will be there for advice. But I will no longer call the shots.

If they join up, they might be killed. Or they might be killed by drowning in a swimming pool, dying in a car crash, being hit by a car on a bike, or some disease. The chances of the latter for the average American are much higher. If we fail in the war against the Islamists the causes of death could be much worse.

The men and women fighting in the military are doing so for a reason. If you read letters, blogs, interviews, and other sources from these people you might learn something about how they actually feel about these things.

Making them into hapless victims, or ignorant boobs who had no idea that joining the military might mean combat, is to belittle them for your own political ends, and I can't see it as anything other than insulting. To destroy their morale, like some leftists are trying to do (not here,) is even worse.

My brother has been in the Air Force for years, and flew cargo planes in the Gulf War.
