War tends to be glamorized, and kids don't understand. Some people worship folks such as those great conservatives John Wayne and Arnold Schwartznegger (sp?) who dramatize it in such a way as to appeal to the immature.
And, I suppose, there is no way to understand it from afar. However, the person in a real war can see for themselves and learn.
And when that person sees the purpose wasn't noble, as it wasn't in Vietnam or Iraq, and that the suffering was a waste, that individuals, families, and villages were wiped out for no good reason except that in 'Nam a couple of American presidents didn't want to quit, or in Iraq the megalomania of another one develops even another perspective.
As St. Paul said, sort of, "When I was a child I had the interests of a child, and as an adult I had the interests of an adult."
Regarding war, some people never make the transition to adulthood.
