re: Caution

I agree Bush took quite a while before the invasion. My beef is that he could have done a few things better, especially given all the time. The first thing I would have liked to see is a more solid case presented to the US citizenry. That could have saved the endless "This is the reason" mindchanging that occurred. The second is he should have had a system in place for the occupation. We have had a lot of experience in this role during the 90's and that experience should have been translated into an organized team to deal with the problems of occupation. From what I've seen its just been putting out fires as they appear. There's nothing wrong with that if we are talking about the small unexpected fires, but it doesn't appear that he was giving much forethought to the big fires he'd be facing. The third thing is the torture issue. There should have been very clear guidelines to all the troops on what exactly is and isn't ok to do to detainees. And finally the missing WMD. He should have spent the time solidifying the evidence and kept his staff from making nonsenical statements like Cheney's "We know where it is" statement.

I really haven't got a problem with us being in Iraq. I think there are very good reasons for being there. I am optimistic that given time it will generate positive change in the region. I just cringe when I hear of the way this administration is doing things. This is too important to do by the seat of their pants.
