How do people gain spiritual comfort from such doom and gloom bunk?

Is it just that they believe they are the chosen few who are blessed with more knowledge than the rest of us fools?

Or is it a meaningless escape from reality: Like watching a scary movie...It gets your fight or flight responses going which has a certain "drug addictive" quality.

Me, I prefer skydiving for this sort of thing.

Just curious.
