Common sense, Lindy.

I'm not sure that an unexplained 10 percent of "unidentified flying objects" has a real meaning. It kind of assumes that 90 percent aren't "unidentified," doesn't it? But I know what you meant.

When I hear a noise in my back yard at night, I assume, barring further evidence, that it's a cat, or raccoon. I don't assume it's a koala bear, or a chupacabra.

Remember that your conclusions not only have to be self-consistent, but consistent with the larger picture. While it is not physically impossible for a koala bear to be in my back yard, it requires a logical background for such a thing to occur. Did one escape from a zoo? Why would it have come as far from the zoo as it did? Does someone have a pet koala bear in the area?

And am I justified in constructing this kind of latticework of actions and consequences from just hearing a noise in the back yard?

One of your problems is you never look below the capstone of the pyramid when observing phenomena.
