According to Newsweek, it sounds like they performed due diligence, but their source either intentionally or unintentionally gave them bad information.
While they did not confirm this with a second independent report from an unrelated third party, they did circulate the information to two other high-placed sources. BOTH the sources did not dispute the information contained within.
The original source has been consistently reliable in other stories, and has never been inconsistent in his information.
The problem in this case is that the original source reversed himself after the checking process, the problem is not that Newsweek fabricated a story otr did not perform due diligence. It is difficult for me to see what Newsweek should have done differently. A source burned them despite their attempt to confirm the story- they did the responsible thing and came out and reported that they could no longer affirm the veracity of the report.
What is going on here is that the Right is capitalizing on this sad event to push this notion that "all media that don't shill for us are against us and out to get us". This is nothing new. And apparently plenty of suckers out there drink this up and don't check the facts.
Basically, it sounds like to me that Newsweek is being far more honest then you when you claim:
"Some one pushed this story knowing it was false, probably to support their anti-war stance. "
Which is not consistent with the known facts. But is consistent with the spin coming out of the White House and the DOD/Pentegon.
So you hold Newsweek to a higher standard than your own beliefs, eh? Sounds like BullShit to me.

- Facts: Like Newsweek saying US troops burned the Koren (Qur'an) when they did not, which results in Afgan violence.
- LOL Now book burning is up there with death, torture and rape?
- Wow, REB. Get the facts straight- it was about flushing the Koran/Qua'ran/Qur'an in a john (plus, I love the Irony)
- Yes, Newsweek falsely claimed American troops had flushed the Koran down the toilet. I was thinking burned. You got me there you.
- correction
