The cause of the riots have been specifically assigned to this article by many different news sources, including the group that set the riots off. More here.
"The riots had nothing to do with this article" is lamer than a legless millipede, and it isn't going to work. Still, it's amazing how many people out there have tried to sell this one.
No wait. There may be something lamer:
While they did not confirm this with a second independent report from an unrelated third party, they did circulate the information to two other high-placed sources. BOTH the sources did not dispute the information contained within.
In other words, "nobody actually told us outright that it was untrue, so it must have been true." Is this how evidence is going to be gathered now?
Newsweek tells its side of the story here.
Note how the testimony of detainees is not treated any differently than the testimony of third parties by the media. An example of the latter would have been the FBI testimony in the Human Rights Watch reports, which would have much more credibility than the word of a prisoner who has been trained to make up incidents of abuse.
BTW, I'm sick to death of anonymous sources. We have no way to analyze the nature of the source, or even if all these sources are the same one or two people every time.

- Then they should expose the source.
- Facts: Like Newsweek saying US troops burned the Koren (Qur'an) when they did not, which results in Afgan violence.
- LOL Now book burning is up there with death, torture and rape?
- Wow, REB. Get the facts straight- it was about flushing the Koran/Qua'ran/Qur'an in a john (plus, I love the Irony)
- Yes, Newsweek falsely claimed American troops had flushed the Koran down the toilet. I was thinking burned. You got me there you.
- correction
- Whatever. They caused violence in Afghanistan based on untruiths.
