Would invading Iran without the people and tools to do the job really help the Iranians?

We are very stretched. We will have enough to do for the near future. Iran is not a small nation. Invasion takes troops, armor, and other equipment. Bombing doesn't take nearly that kind of commitment, but has the unfortunate side effect of killing a lot more people who just happened to be in the way.

Would it really help to cause civil unrest without expectation that a desirable outcome can be achieved?

We had been told that the Iraqis would greet American troups the way the French greeted the Allies in World War II: with kisses and flowers and dancing. This has not been the case.

What assurance do you offer that the Iranians will be happier to see us than the Iraqis have been? To succeed with our armed forces in their current state of activity would mean a considerable uprising in support of the US and cooperation from a large cross-section of the Iranian people. Could we count on serious, active support from a large number of people? With things the way they are, we could not succeed without it.

If we don't succeed and must withdraw, will that leave you better off or worse off?

If you pin all your hopes to intervention from outside, then the only hope you will have is intervention from outside.
