re: Would invading Iran without the people and tools to do the job really help the Iranians?

Bombing doesn't take nearly that kind of commitment, but has the unfortunate side effect of killing a lot more people who just happened to be in the way.

If you are going to bomb nuclear facilities, there are no civilians around, even if there are some, the casualties are minimum.

Would it really help to cause civil unrest without expectation that a desirable outcome can be achieved?

Mullahs are making their houses on a shaky foundation, the desirable outcome as many of you suggest, is in our own hands, the mullahs will not be able to control the situation, if Americans bomb the industrial and nuclear facilities on a daily basis. In that condition, Iranians will rise up again and there is nothing that can controll them because they are seeing how the world is turning its back on mullahs, but as long as EU is sitting around a table with the murderers of Iranian people, there is no hope for Iranians to rise up because they know the regime will crack them down. America attacks and we will rise up, mullahs don't know which one should they control.

We had been told that the Iraqis would greet American troups the way the French greeted the Allies in World War II: with kisses and flowers and dancing. This has not been the case.

Iraqis didn't have an 'Islamic Republic' for 25 years to murder them in the name of islam. Yes they had Saddam but now they want an Islamic state. Well let them have it to kill themselves for islam. We have passed this stage and Iranian youth are generally disgusted with islam. And it's not even our original religion. Iranian were originally Zarathustirans and were forced to convert to islam 1400 year ago by arab invasion.

Maybe you don't believe me, but I always wished US invaded Iran instead of Iraq, just to show the world Americans deserve to be greeted like WW2.

Iranian people are probably the only nation in middle east that mourns for the victims of 9/11 even in the very first nights by comming to streets and lighting candles against the will of mullahs. Which other nation in middle east lighted candle for Americans? except Israel of course.

I think you knew this, but if you never know, check the pictures out:

(I was personally there and lighted 2 candles for 9/11 victims)

Iran mourns America's dead

September 18, 2001: Ordinary Iranians hold candles during a vigil in Terhan to mourn the loss of life in the United States after hijackers crashed airliners into the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington DC.....

IRANIAN STUDENTS ARE CALLING FOR PRO-AMERICAN DEMONSTRATIONS

it's one year after.

What assurance do you offer that the Iranians will be happier to see us than the Iraqis have been? I tried to explain that for you with my weak english above. Iranians are pro-western, they hate islam and mullahs and they experienced both secular and islamic dictatorships. Iraqis don't have the complete experience as Iranians so they are way way behind us for understanding democracy.

To succeed with our armed forces in their current state of activity would mean a considerable uprising in support of the US and cooperation from a large cross-section of the Iranian people. What do you think will happen if American forces start to enter Iran from Afghanistan and occupy east of Iran? Mullahs will put any force on it? Many Iranian soldiers are sick of this regime too. People think all those who you see on TV in military shows are 100% islamic jihadists, I have many friends in army because they can't find any other job but they are not gonna risk their lives on mullahs, many of them will run away. Iranian are in general pro-Western in their daily life. I am sure majority of Iranians will support American invasion as a mean to stand up and finish the remnants of mullahs' regime.

Could we count on serious, active support from a large number of people? With things the way they are, we could not succeed without it. Again, I am talking for myself and avoiding generalizing but I can say: "You bet!"

f we don't succeed and must withdraw, will that leave you better off or worse off? How can America not succeed, again you may think it was wrong to invade Iraq, but I still think it was a right choice, the world need to stand up against the tyrants and no one can expect anything from europeans. But l leave discussion on wether invading Iraq was right or wrong for another time. Now we are talking about Iran: You don't need to withdraw, we are talking about constant and effective air assults. Invading with ground forces is of course something else which I also don't think George W. will do it (unless there would be a miracle for us) but attacking from the air is a very possible and effective options, leaving mullahs with a chaos and let Iranians revolt again.

If you pin all your hopes to intervention from outside, then the only hope you will have is intervention from outside. Yes you are right, there is no way for Iranians to stand up without outside help, mullahs have a grip on power and no one except US power can take them down.
