I see hate as half an equation

Hate is negative value of anything and love is the absolute value. All negative numbers have an absolute value. Once on understands this process of establishing absolute value - the negative and the absolute create a balance.

Religionists can't come to this equation because in their world "pure evil" and "pure good" exist and they haven't recognized how limited and wrong that is. The world is far more complex than presented by Pat Robertson.

The give and take of life is created by love/hate and positive/negative views. Storms are caused by the meeting of hot and cold fronts. Societies are built upon the conflicts of earlier days. All negatives have this positive or "absolute" quantity inherent to them.

Murder, destruction, death...and yes hate. It's up to us to "find the silver lining" or discover this absolute - when we do we balance this hatred. It's not a matter of suppressing hate, but realizing that if we hate something we have a narrow focus that is excluding the good.

An early math student who knows nothing of the absolute value of a number can't understand how -35 will equal 35, for them such a process doesn't exist yet. If I hate racists, I don't see how racism actually helps provide a contrast and bring about growth in others.

I know what you're getting at. Hate is normal reaction to an incomplete data set. Once one plugs in the other data the hate is put in context and no longer has any weight.

Balance. The universe tries to achieve it, we try to achieve it, even though it's never truly able to be achieved. Perhaps the greater balance exists because of the fluctuations. So we struggle as we encounter new ideas and different people. Eventually we master such struggles and we move on to new ones. Never ending opportunities to learn.
