Sometimes...

...one has to use the material at hand. While I discount 95% as rewritten and added material that had nothing to do with Jesus, I find the new testament and Jesus' attributed quotes as a source to be scoured, often with futility, for some sort of data and insight on the man's personality, words and beliefs.

Clearly many of his attributed statements negate the whole idea that he was trying to bring a new religion into existence, and in fact one can read into it that he was actively pulling down the Judaistic power structure and worship of Jehovah that prevailed in the region.

Then there are countless attributed statements, poorly written and completely out of tone, that sound like someone adding hellfire and fear to make the section conform to the old testament violent god.

The bible was rewritten numerous times, the King James version is almost worthless as a historical document and I prefer to scour the Tyndale bible which is a slightly less twisted and earlier source, but I also find the Dead Sea Scrolls and the teachings of the Essenes which match much of Jesus' beliefs to be a way of understanding what Jesus was about. It's quite possible he was an Essene and studied the Essenic orders and was espousing this philosophy in Jerusalem.

I obviously can't say for certain Jesus was better, saner and more constructive than Mohammed. I can only speak of what I get from reading the lines and between the lines.

And like I said earlier, Jesus the man and Christianity are two completely separate things - certainly in my mind - no matter whether Christianity has claimed him or not.
