You are right in that fighting my emotional developing revulsion to Islam is a personal response that only I can reconcile with my general tolerance towards belief systems in general.
It is interesting that you bring up Zoroasterism. Our concept of the dualism of good/evil entered Judeo-Christian thought during the diaspora when the Jews were exposed to the Persian culture. In the ancient Jewish culture, the only real "sin" was the sin of apostacy. Other transgressions were violations of the law and repugnant to the society and should be forgiven during jubilee, but offending God was outside the pale.
The general concepts of religion come not from scholars, but people do pay attention to what their direct representatives of the gods tell tham. Thus, Pat Robertson has a following as does Rush Limbaugh.
In short, unless there is something positive from the Mullahs and Imans, I find it hard to see any change in the current situation, but Jordan gives me hope of this being the new Islamic reality.
But thanks for reminding me that I have to own my attitudes, viewpoints, and beliefs.
