HD-DVD versus Blu-Ray

From newspaper articles I've seen, this is being set up as another "Beta versus VHS" thing. I don't know the guts of how a laser disk reader works in a computer, but I know mine reads like a dozen different formats.

In VHS vs. Beta, we were dealing with two mechanically-different systems. As far as I know, in a laser disk reader, it's just software and the ability of the laser to track a certain way.

Why is it that big a deal to make a reader that will easily read either format?
