Bone! Pick! Call you on that one.
With 20/20 hindsight we know it was ultimately foolish for the Native Americans to drive herds of buffalo off cliffs and into extinction to harvest a tiny percentage of the meat--they ultimately deprived themself of buffalo as a source of meat.
Ummmmmmmmmmmmm, Robert, you might want to reconsider that statement.
Us 'skins' didn't kill em off. In fact after the horses came we just took only as many as we needed. At the beginning of the 1800's there were millions of them roaming from Canada to Mexico. Herds that took more than a day to pass a single point were so common it didn't rate a coment. Cliff drives were a response to a food source that could be obtained only in that manner. Even the mighty Indain knew better than to walk up to the herd and start twainging away with a bow and arrow. You sorta ended up a bloody mudhole in the grass if you tried.
Cliff drives were far in the past (as seen by the peoples of the plains) when the buffalo were decimated by market hunting in the mid 1800's by the likes of Buffalo Bill & Co. Which was encouraged by a number of "Official Policies", easier to deal with the "Indian Problem" when we were dying of hunger.
